While the internet makes it easy to find products, it also means cheap, low-quality fittings often appear first in searches — making it harder to spot genuine value. With over 30 years in the industry, I’ve seen how misleading marketing can be. Many fittings look identical but differ greatly in performance, efficiency, and lifespan. - LED Chips: High-quality LEDs come from “single-bin” chips, offering consistent colour and output. Cheaper fittings often use mixed bins, leading to uneven colour temperatures and shorter life.
- Drivers: How LEDs are powered affects brightness and longevity. Overdriven LEDs are cheaper but fail faster.
- Lumens: Be aware of “chip lumens” versus “luminaire lumens.” Only fittings tested with full photometry give reliable light output data.
- Lifespan: Look for L70, L80 or L90 ratings, not vague “life expectancy” claims. A true L70 of 50,000 hours can last three times longer than many cheap alternatives.
- Warranty: Long warranties don’t always mean long life. Always read the small print for usage limits and exclusions.
