Ricoman Casambi Controlled RGBW Lighting – Estrella Pro Range

The Ricoman Casambi‑controlled RGBW Lighting in the Estrella Pro range delivers outstanding versatility. When a client requested a Noughts and Crosses lighting pattern for a gym refurbishment in Bathgate, the Estrella Pro system immediately stood out as the ideal solution. We installed Ricoman’s Casambi‑controlled RGBW fittings throughout the gym to bring the concept to life.

Design

The Estrella Pro range allows designers to combine linear fittings with corners, crossovers, and tees, creating virtually unlimited layout possibilities. Each fitting comes in multiple lengths, outputs, colour temperatures, and configurations, including RGBW or CCT, along with seven louvre or diffuser options. With support for surface, suspended, or recessed installation, the range continues to be recognised as a market leader.

To extend design flexibility even further, Ricoman’s Flow range introduces curved and twisted sections. These components make it possible to form everything from simple circles to complex, organic shapes, enabling creative lighting designs that match almost any vision.

After exploring several design variations, the client selected a ceiling layout built from surface‑mounted crosses. Ricoman manufactured the fittings at their Salford facility, completing and delivering the full order in around four weeks.

Commissioning

After the installation is completed, we begin commissioning to ensure the system performs exactly as intended. The client chose to control the lighting from an iPad, so we installed the Casambi App, created the client’s network, and updated the firmware. These steps may be routine, but they establish the foundation for a stable and reliable lighting system.

Once every fitting was paired into the Casambi network, we created a full set of scenes, each offering a different lighting configuration tailored to the client’s needs.

A Casambi‑controlled RGBW lighting system delivers exceptional flexibility. It lets users control each fitting individually, operate them all together, or manage customised groups. All adjustments happen directly through the App, where scenes and settings can be activated instantly with a single tap. This approach gives the client powerful control without unnecessary complexity, allowing the lighting to adapt effortlessly to any activity or atmosphere.

Once set up, the client can simply switch the created scenes on and off at a touch of the app. Alternatively, they can play about with the settings to create their own. It’s pretty quick and simple to learn.

Casambi Gallery Function

After creating a full set of preset scenes for the client, we move on to the finer details. In many projects, clients quickly adopt the Gallery function in the Casambi App as their preferred method of control. It gives staff a simple, intuitive interface that removes any complexity from day‑to‑day operation.

We take a photo of the actual room and place interactive spheres over each lighting fitting. When a user taps a sphere—whether it represents a single fitting or a group—the lights switch on, off, dim, or adjust instantly. This highly visual interface makes the entire system easy to understand and effortless to operate.

The Gallery function turns even the most complex lighting layouts into a straightforward, user‑friendly control method. It’s an ideal solution for commercial spaces where clarity, speed, and usability matter.

Conclusion

Every lighting project is different, and the requirements of each space drive the choice of control system. In whole‑house environments that already use Lutron Homeworks, designers often choose DMX for RGBW control. Other projects may benefit from 0–10V, DALI, or even mains dimming, with higher loads typically performing better on 0–10V or DALI. For smaller RGBW strip installations, a DMX colour wheel can deliver the right level of control.

When re‑wiring isn’t possible, Casambi offers a clear advantage. In this project, we integrated the Casambi device directly into the fittings. On other installations, we use an in‑line Casambi unit before the first fitting to control the entire circuit. This flexibility allows us to create lighting effects that simply weren’t achievable a few years ago.
